JULIE YOUNG- mid twenties An employee—housekeeping, reception. Middle class, white, college educated.Definitive about her confusion. Does not claim a sexuality; she has had both male and female partners. Pretty, feminine; possesses a powerful magnetism.
SEAN CARRINGTON mid twenties
The male equivalent to Paris Hilton. Extremely wealthy, very famous, white. The well-dressed-cocky-chip-on-his-shoulder-pretentious-well-spoken-charming-Yale-grad. The kind who loves Dane Cook, who calls his buddies ‘bro’ ironically. Beneath that, he is a scrawny ten year old boy desperately needing attention, (for god’s sake, someone play catch with him already!)
KRIS/KRISTINA GREEN – late twenties
Another hotel employee—food service & housekeeping. Julie’s girlfriend. Graduated college two/three years ago. Middle class, color inclusive, highly educated. Identifies as transgendered (pre-op), but this is a recent development. Strong convictions and happier for it. Loves Julie deeply.
RICHARD CARRINGTON late fifties
Sean’s father. The boss of the upscale hotel in which the play is set. Upper class, white, less educated than his son but it’s hardly hindered him.Conservative without being Tea Party crazy. Polite, diplomatic. Not nearly the macho villain he is made out to be. He tries to be a good man, and is happy enough being defined that way.
OFFICER DON mid fifties Security/surveillance worker. Lower class, white, very uneducated. Of course he owns a truck. Beneath a stereotypical Southern upbringing, he has a huge, gentle heart. Diabetic. His wife has just left him, but no, he doesn’t want to talk about it. His defense mechanism is happiness.
OFFICER HANI – mid thirties Security/surveillance worker. Lower Middle Class, middle eastern but born in USA, far too educated for this job. He clings to his lost academia. The jury’s still out on his sexuality. Hani follows Julie like an orchestra follows their conductor: militarily, in sync, smart, willing. Still, remember, the orchestra can make a powerful noise all on their own—sans baton–if they so choose.
SYNOPSIS: When Sean, the famous son of a multi-millionaire, crashes an employee party at one of his father’s hotels, he meets Julie, a low income hotel employee. Shortly thereafter, she agrees to go home with him, but they don’t get very far—on the way down, the elevator stops. Stuck, Julie and Sean contemplate getting help, but neither follows through. Their flirtatious, digging questions and taunts, not to mention mounting sexual tension, culminate in two startling confessions, prompting Julie to make a bold, controversial decision.
Inspired by Strindberg’s Miss Julie, Bees and Lions is also about the fall of a woman—but this time when said woman falls, she takes everyone with her—some willingly–in the name of her cause. Who will be the first to get back up?
